Peter Martin and John Blane decide to take a holiday in a high tech amusement park, Westworld. Here they get to play cowboys - saloon brawls, saloon girls and quick draws against the town's gunslinger - with lifelike robots. All is well for the first few days but when the park's central computer malfunctions, the built-in safety features are turned off and the robots begin to attack the guests. The gunslinger in particular seems indestructible and relentlessly pursues his prey.
In a near future, the Delos Company offers the vacation of the future in in the amusement parks Medievalworld, Romanworld and Westworld for U$ 1,000 per day. The vacationers get to experience life in the themed period, doing whatever he or she wants, interacting with the robot inhabitants that populate the parks. Peter Martin and John Blane travel by hovercraft to Westworld and soon Peter duels against a Gunslinger. However, when there is a malfunctioning of the machinery, the robots get out of control, jeopardizing the guests.
In a million dollar futuristic theme park resort, which you can either to choose to live your fantasy in the Wild West, Medieval times or the Roman Empire. Your dream comes to life! In this case we mostly follow two friends in Westworld, a lawyer and businessman play it out amongst gunmen and dance-hall girls, who are robots programmed to serve the guest&#39;s violent and lustful fantasies - until something goes wrong with their circuity and they malfunction. Now they are no longer under the control of the park and are turning on the humans. Our two visitors are also being prayed on by a berserk gunslinger robot (Yul Brynner is splendidly cast) who has their number on his sights.<br/><br/>Michael Crichton who directed this feature and wrote the story has came up with a flawed, but mostly thrilling ride! No wonder where he got his inspiration to write the novel &quot;Jurassic Park&quot;. Both are very similar in the idea and finish product, the only difference is one&#39;s about dinosaurs running amok in a amusement park, while this one it was the robots turn. It&#39;s just &quot;Jurassic Park&quot; got a more grander treatment compared to &quot;Westworld&quot;, it would&#39;ve been great to see what &quot;Westworld&quot; would&#39;ve been like if it had a bigger budget to throw around. I wouldn&#39;t be surprise if a remake pops up. But anyhow, what we did get worked rightly so.<br/><br/>Fresh and vastly entertaining for its time, even if the feel of it and effects seem quite dated now, but that hardly hampered my enjoyment. It&#39;s under produced and the continuity of the story and characters is untidy and vague, but hey, it makes up for it with the peculiar state, dry humour and air of excitement that streams through it. It may be low budget feature, but its creativity doesn&#39;t match that fate! The execution was hugely inventive, with plenty of memorable sequences and a lot of surprises that sneak up on you. Those memorable moments involved Yul Brynner&#39;s eerie character. You could say it was Yul&#39;s show, even if his screen time was short, but he definitely left an imprint. There&#39;s no denying that! Plus the superior script was impressive, with certain touches of satire and it didn&#39;t come across as forced. The special effects weren&#39;t mind blowing, but technically sound and the score, maybe sometimes tacky, but overall it captured each setting perfectly and knew how to keep your heart pounding during those taut moments. The sensational sets were well crafted and fitted in perfectly, as if you were right there with the guests in those periods. Performances were solid, Richard Benjamin and James Brolin were likable in their roles as the visitors of Westworld, who get more than they bargained for.<br/><br/>Crichton engineered a larger than life flick here, where the first hour seems to have the guests meander about their chosen lifestyle, with its small added thrills and amusing jabs of irony. Sure, it was slow going, but also hypnotically good at the same time. When the pace entirely picks in the last twenty minutes, so does the intense nature of it, going hand-to-hand when the faults and cracks appear in the theme park. There&#39;s such an underlying sense of dread. While, the scene involving Brynner&#39;s character hunting his victim/s remarkably makes you real anxious and keeps you on the edge, as there&#39;s no help or solution to stop this happening. Although, when it came to the end it does come across a bit anticlimactic after its build up. I just wished we saw more of the devastation of the park and also the film&#39;s length was all too short. When it finishes you&#39;ll be wanting more… well for one I did! <br/><br/>Limited to its budget, but Michael Crichton&#39;s work is ambitiously different, memorably realised and growing with excitement, despite some story continuity issues. This is more than a passable viewing.
Westworld is one of the most distinctive and original sci-fi films from the 70&#39;s. It&#39;s hybrid of the western with science fiction is pretty unusual but the combination is very good and works to the strengths of both genres. Its writer and director is Michael Crichton who is mainly known as a novelist. His books have been adapted into other films, like the excellent earlier hard sci-fi movie The Andromeda Strain and the more adventure-orientated later film Jurassic Park. Westworld shares some pretty obvious ground with that latter Steven Spielberg blockbuster, with its story revolving around a fun-park for adults that goes horribly wrong, resulting in the human visitors becoming the prey. For my money though, Westworld is a far superior film and is a lot more involving.<br/><br/>Its story is as simple as can be. A couple of friends go to a new high-tech fun-park called Westworld where they can play at being cowboys for a week. Not only are the environs a carefully replicated model of an 1880&#39;s Wild West town but it is also populated with androids that look and act like characters from the Wild West. The trouble is that something malfunctions and the robots turn on their human guests.<br/><br/>It would only be fair to say that you need to stretch your incredulity a little bit to accept the scientific premises presented. The reasons given for how people cannot be harmed here are fairly ropey to say the least. But, ultimately, this isn&#39;t too important as the basic idea of the film is so interesting, so if you just roll with it you will be rewarded. The very fact that the film can play up the pleasures of both distinctive genres is in itself a great start point. What also helps is that the main characters are pretty good and believable. It&#39;s interesting how it also goes against audience expectations somewhat too with it being the meek character played by Richard Benjamin who becomes the main figure and hero, whereas the more typical alpha male James Brolin is killed off. Benjamin is pretty good in the role and makes for an engaging enough lead. But it&#39;s Yul Brynner that everyone really remembers. His turn as a cold-eyed, black-clad, gun-man android is easily the most iconic in the film. He is perfectly cast really and is excellent throughout. We also get to see the other two worlds too - Medieval World and Roman World – and it is kind of fun seeing the incongruous crossover of a gunslinger from the old west walking through Roman gardens and a medieval castle, as well as the high-tech corridors of the control area of the park. All this variety is very good, while the effects work is simple but effective with some very effective stuff done with the droids. Overall, this is a great, tense 70&#39;s sci-fi flick.
Brynner is very good, his austere presence and unflinching intent making him seem indestructible.
It could have been a prototype test for future models.<br/><br/>Or the scientist/mechanic could have been one of the machines that was self-aware and built the robots as was mentioned by the scientists.
